About Us

Eagle Rock Junior/Senior High School, an International Baccalaureate World School, is located between the cities of Pasadena and Glendale in the northeastern tip of Los Angeles, one of sixty-one high schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District. It is the only campus with a 7-12 grade configuration for the Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. ERHS houses both a comprehensive junior and senior high school, as well a magnet program serving gifted, high ability and highly gifted students in grades 7-12.  ERHS also offers a fully authorized IB Middle Years Programme to all students grades 7-10, and the IB Diploma Programme in grades 11-12.

Gifted, Highly Gifted, and High Ability Magnet:  The Magnet Program meets the needs of gifted learners with respect to curriculum content, pace, process, and/or enrichment within an academic environment that values and enhances intelligence, talent, affective growth, and intuitive ability. International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme: The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP is a four-year programme at ERHS. The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents. MYP students also complete long-term Personal Project at the end of grade 10, an independent research project of the student’s choosing. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme: ERHS is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. The DP was established in to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding. The DP curriculum is made up of six subject groups and the DP core, comprising theory of knowledge (TOK), creativity, activity, service (CAS) and the extended essay. Through the DP core, students reflect on the nature of knowledge, complete independent research and undertake a project that often involves community service. Foreign Languages:   French, Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic.

Junior High School Music: Choir and Beginning Band are open to everyone. Intermediate Band and Concert Band require an audition. Students who play a string instrument are welcome in Intermediate or Concert Band based on their audition. There are several Jazz Ensembles available after school for more advanced players no matter what grade. First year choir students may audition for a more advanced choir in the Spring Semester. 

Sports:  Intramural sports are available as an activity for junior high students.

Curriculum

Gifted and High Ability Magnet:  The Magnet Program is discussed above and continues for eligible students in grades 7-12. 

International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme:  The Programme is described above and continues for all students in grades 7-10.

International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme:  The Programme is described above and continues for all students in grades 11-12.

AP Courses:   US History, World History, US Government, Human Geography, English Language, English Literature, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Calculus AB, Calculus BC, Statistics, Biology, Environmental Science, Psychology, Physics, Computer Science, and Studio Art.

Foreign Languages:  French, Spanish, Mandarin and Arabic.

Students who play a string instrument are welcome in any of the three auditioned ensembles based on their audition results. There are several Jazz Ensembles that meet after school for more advanced players. First year choir students may audition for a more advanced choir in the Spring Semester. The Symphonic Band marches in parades and plays at Football games for the Fall Semester. Spring Semester, they go to Festival at Disneyland or Universal studios, competing against bands across the country. 

Drama:  Theater Arts students produce and present a play each semester.  Students also participate in drama competitions and festivals.

Journalism:  Journalism students are responsible for writing and producing The Eagle's Scream, a weekly student newspaper that reports on ERHS and the local community.

Yearbook:   Students produce, raise funds for and publish the Totem Yearbook developing photography skills as well as fundraising and business skills.

Leadership:  Students organize and lead numerous student activities including fundraising, community service, recognition events, and school dances.  Students in Grades 7-12 may take a Leadership class. 

Academic Decathlon:  Students join the ERHS Academic Decathlon team to prepare for and participate at district-wide academic competitions.

Sports

Football, Baseball, Softball, Basketball, Soccer, Tennis, Water Polo, Wrestling, Cross-country, Volleyball, Track & Field, and Swimming. ERHS fields Boys and Girls varsity and junior varsity teams in each sport except for Football (boys only) and Softball (girls only).  ERHS sports teams compete in the Northeastern League of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Student Clubs & Organizations

Students participate in numerous clubs and organizations including but not limited to: Key Club, Anime Club, MESA, Latin Jazz Band, Cheer, California Scholarship Federation, Yearbook, Recycling Club, Drill Team, The Writer’s Bloc, Battle of the Bands, Nature Club, Anti-Bullying Club, Comedy Improv Club, SAGA, Yo-Yo Club, Feminism Club, Gear-Up Mentoring Club, Eagles Fellowship, Robotics, Greenpeace Club, College Readiness Club, and Science Olympiad.

College Admission Rates

4-year colleges:  49.4% of ERHS graduates attend four-year colleges including California public universities (UC and Cal State systems), MIT, Stanford, the Ivy League (including Harvard and Yale), and other private and public colleges.

2-year colleges:  46% of ERHS graduates attend 2-year colleges.

Other:  4% of ERHS graduates attend vocational school and other post secondary educational opportunities such as the military or occupational programs.

Diversity:  The total student population consists of 1.0% American Indian/Alaskan, 8.0% Asian, 21.0% Filipino, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 2.0% African-American, 58.0% Hispanic, and 10.0% White.

Facility: The 40-acre campus was established in 1927.  The campus includes the current main building, gymnasium facilities, auditorium, tennis courts, and a swimming pool.
